Diversity Strategy · ANZCA and FPM

Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and Faculty of Pain Medicine

From meaningful activity to a published DEIB strategy and roadmap.

Co-designing a governance-backed DEIB framework for a complex, multi-constituency medical college.

Client Goals

The mandate

The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and Faculty of Pain Medicine (ANZCA and FPM) is a complex, multi-constituency organisation with members, fellows, trainees, staff and community stakeholders — each with different relationships to the organisation and different experiences of inclusion. Like many member-based bodies, ANZCA and FPM had meaningful DEIB activity underway but lacked an overarching strategy to connect it. They needed a DEI Framework and Roadmap that aligned their external mission with internal workforce practices, with clear priorities, governance and accountability.

  • Connect existing DEIB activity into a coherent strategy
  • Align external mission with internal workforce practices
  • Define clear priorities, governance and accountability
  • Build ownership across multiple constituencies

What We Did

Our approach

Desktop Review & Context Mapping

  • Reviewed existing strategy, DEI statements, policies, action plans and related documentation
  • Mapped the organisational context across members, fellows, trainees, staff and community stakeholders
  • Identified strengths, gaps and risks in current DEIB activity

Stakeholder Consultation & Co-Design

  • Interviews and consultation with key internal and external constituencies
  • Tested emerging priorities against lived experience and organisational realities
  • Built shared language and ownership before final delivery

Evidence-Based Framework & Roadmap

  • Developed priorities, actions, success measures and governance recommendations grounded in evidence
  • Iterative co-design process incorporating stakeholder feedback
  • Final deliverable designed for public adoption and implementation

The Outcome

Stakeholder Co-Ownership

  • Recommendations grounded in organisational context and stakeholder input
  • Public adoption demonstrated leadership commitment and shared ownership

  • A governance framework to support implementation and ongoing review
  • Clear accountability structures for sustained progress

Public Accountability

  • The framework and roadmap were published publicly
  • External scrutiny and member transparency were embraced as part of the strategy

Client Feedback

In their words

"When ANZCA and FPM sought a consultant to develop our DEI strategy, we needed someone who could grasp our organisation's complexity and bring together our efforts under a coherent, holistic approach. After speaking with several consultants, Felicity stood out. Rather than offering a templated solution, she demonstrated a genuine willingness to deeply understand our history, mission, values, operations, culture, strategy and stakeholders. The result was a tailored DEI strategy that is uniquely ours. We subsequently re-engaged Felicity to deliver DEI learning across the organisation, supporting the strategy's successful implementation. Her deep expertise, skilled facilitation, and commitment to understanding our context made her the clear choice — both times. Felicity has been an invaluable partner and we look forward to continuing our work together."
