Advice & Strategy · WGEA & Gender Equality

WGEA targets, standards, & pay gap reporting.

Australia's gender equality obligations have changed. Reporting policies alone is no longer enough — regulators now expect demonstrable progress. We help organisations turn the new WGEA framework into evidence-based strategies that drive genuine workplace change.

Practical, outcome-focused

From reporting policies to demonstrating outcomes.

For many Australian organisations, WGEA compliance once meant submitting an annual report to the Workplace Gender Equality Agency. That era has ended.

Recent amendments to the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012 now require organisations with 500 or more employees to participate in the Gender Equality Targets Scheme — selecting specific gender equality targets and demonstrating measurable progress over a three-year cycle.

Advisory snapshot

What you need to know about the new WGEA framework.

Private sector employers must select their Gender Equality Targets during the 2025–26 reporting cycle (April–May 2026). Ambitious, data-aligned targets drive change, while poorly chosen targets risk non-compliance.

Designated Relevant Employers (DREs) with 500+ employees must participate in the Targets Scheme. Employers with 100–499 employees are encouraged to use the framework voluntarily.

WGEA Indicators

The six gender equality indicators.

All relevant employers covered by the Act must meet the Gender Equality Standards by having policies or strategies supporting each of these indicators.

Indicator 01

Gender composition of the workforce

Report gender representation across roles and leadership levels to identify gaps and monitor change.

Indicator 02

Gender composition of governing bodies

Report on board and governing body gender makeup, reflecting leadership commitment to equality.

Indicator 03

Equal pay & gender pay gaps

Analyse remuneration data — including occupational segregation, parental leave impacts and equal remuneration for work of equal or comparable value.

Indicator 04

Flexible work & support for parents and carers

Report on availability and utilisation of flexible arrangements, ensuring support for caring responsibilities is equitable and accessible.

Indicator 05

Consultation with employees on gender equality

Meaningful engagement and consultation with employees and relevant employee organisations to inform strategies.

Indicator 06

Prevention of sexual harassment & sex-based discrimination

Policies and practices aligned with the Sex Discrimination Act and the Respect@Work positive duty.
